What’s this blog about?
Most broadly, it’s about the stuff that we bring into our lives, and our connection with that stuff.
We felt that after decades of excess and clutter, people still wanted great design and beauty, but craved something more authentic. They wanted to be surrounded by things that have meaning: but not mass-made, something that’s more real, something more reflective of who we really are. We call these things DesignCraft.
And that got us thinking. Isn’t one of the deepest forms of connection knowing how a product is made, and who made it? So in addition to exploring ways to surround ourselves with design with meaning, and what’s going on in the wide world of design and craft, we’ll be exploring the community of people (we call them DesignCrafters) who design and make things for our homes and selves. They’re our heroes, who go out there every day, trying to make a living out of the work they love, trying to find that perfect balance between inspiration and commerce, and trying to bring just a little more beauty and meaning into the world. We salute them.
I love this. I want to see and read more. And you’ve inspired me. I want to make up my own list of objects that have stood the test of time. For example, I also have a camera from my father, c. 1945. I haven’t used it since the mid sixties, but wouldn’t consider getting rid of it. Or, a Timex pocket watch that my mother used when she was gardening. It is a perfect, clean design.
Thanks again, Regina. This is great!
Thanks, Peter!
Thanks, Regina. What fun to connect with people outside of my circle who share a love of the beautiful and functional in their lives. Reaffirming.
I love this philosophy. Just having “stuff” leaves me feeling really empty. But when my stuff allows me to connect to real life experiences, whether my own or the makers, they become real. Thanks for creating a blog that harnesses that great energy for all of us!
What a nice blog. I used to live just outside SF and was constantly inspired by some of the brilliant design in the area. More power to your elbow, I say.
Dan
Thanks Dan…love your blog as well. Play, creativity and fun are what we’re all about. And London…(wistful sigh) my favorite city, my spiritual home.
Love the blog!
Thanks Paul–it’s so much fun! I’m hoping that you’re also looking at our regular blog http://www.handfulofsalt.com–not the one with WordPress in the URL. Also hope you got a chance to look at our holiday guide!
